Eli Shivhon has been helping out with the progress of the new humanities building at Grossmont High School. Ken Riha who is president of Riha Construction and is the general contractor of the project called Shivhon an artist behind the controls as the 1985 Israeli immigrant put the wide-flange beam with an attached American flag into just the right spot for bolting.
Now to the average person this sounds like a typical job for a crane operator, lift and place. However Eli Shivhon raised a 550 pound steel beam to the top of the two story steel skeleton structure and smoothly lowered the 20 foot piece perfectly into place for bolting. The catch here is that did this using his one and only 47,000 pound capacity boom truck that he calls Terex. Typically this is not the size crane you would use for a job like this but because Shivhon is so good at what he does he was able to make the project work perfectly and smoothly on schedule. When asked about this Shivhon replied “Only a professional crane operator can do that right on the money. That’s what I’ve been doing for 30 years.”

The Grossmont High School humanities classroom building project is $16.7 million. That was in contrast to the Poway Unified School District capital appreciation bond expected to be $105 million which in turn will cost taxpayers almost $1 billion over the coming years. A district fact sheet notes that the bond will be budgeted at $601 million. Moreover, The district says this 31 classroom project at Grossmont High School is the largest project in the program taking part of the November 2008 voter approved $417 million bond measure.
Prior to Shivhon lifting the last steel beam into place the workers went ahead signed the beam with big pens and heard schools Superintendent Ralf Swenson again praise and thank East County voters for approving Prop U which funds the payment for the work. This Prop will also include brand new tennis courts for the school. Shivhon is local to the San Fernando Valley in California but also works up and down the coast. Eli Crane Service serves San Diego Los Angeles Ventura County Santa Barbara and the Inland Empire is where he has done some of his last projects.
