The new film Les Misérables is based on the French historical novel by Victor Hugo. The novel was first published in 1862 and is widely considered one of the greatest novels of the nineteenth century. The title can be variously translated from the French as The MiserableThe WretchedThe Poor OnesThe Wretched Poor, or The Victims. However in the English-speaking world the novel is usually referred to by its original French title Les Miserables. The story follows a number of characters and their story of redemption.

Universal Pictures brings us the holiday drama to enjoy as it opens christmas day. The movie itself is filled with a wonderful cast of big name actors known worldwide. Some of the main characters in the film are Hugh Jackman, Russel Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried, Sacha Baron Cohen and Helena Bonham Carter.

Les Miserables Synopsis

The story is about Jean Valjean played by Hugh Jackman who is a Frenchman imprisoned for stealing bread. He has broken his parole and now must flee from police Inspector Javert played Russell Crowe. During the story the former prisoner Jean Valjean becomes mayor of a small town in France and agrees to take care of Cosette the illegitimate daughter of Fantine. All this while still having to avoid being captured again by Javert the a police inspector. The pursuit begins to consumes both men’s lives and after two decades on the run Valjean finds himself in the midst of the 1832 June Rebellion in Paris.
