Mo Yan Wins Nobel Literature Prize

On Thursday the Swedish Academy announced that the 2012 Nobel Prize in Literature is awarded to Chinese author Mo Yan. Mo Yan was born in 1955 in Gaomi China and has come to be known as one of the most famous Chinese Authors because he is the most often banned and widely pirated of all Chinese writers. Mo Yan was said to be both happy and scared when the Nobel organizers contacted him to noify him he had won the prize. He has come to be the Chinese Nobel Laureate of his time.

Some of his well known works that are only said to be published in English in 2013 are Big Breasts and Wide HipsLife and Death are Wearing Me Out and Sandalwood Death. His most recent published work is called Wa and is in Chinese. The published work basically covers the sad truth of China’s single child policy.

He is known in the West for two of his novels which were the basis of the film Red Sorghum. While his American audience has been limited the film Red Sorghum was directed by Zhang Yimou and came to be known as one of the most internationally acclaimed Chinese films. Furthermore the movie was seen by millions.

Other than books Mo Yan also publishes short stories and essays on various topics. Yan’s stories range from fantasy to reality and have both historical and social perspectives. However despite the social criticism he receives in his homeland he is still one of the most contemporary artsits of his time.

On another note the The Associated Press announced that the Chinese Government who controls its national television very tightly did one of the most odd things when they acually cut into a live newscast to announce the award. Something that typically does not happen unless its a big deal so Mo Yan was both happy and scared at the same time.

In other news the Nobel committees have announced a few prizes so far this week in physics, chemistry and medicine. Furthermore the 2012 Nobel Peace laureate prize is to be named on Friday by the Norwegian Nobel Committee and the prize in economics is to be announced on Monday by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.
