Peanut Butter Recall
New Mexico-based Sunland Inc. has expanded its peanut butter recall to include almond butter, cashew butters, tahini and blanched and roasted peanut products
The Food and Drug Administration is expanding its peanut butter recall as well as including other nut-based products in 30 states linked to a widespread salmonella outbreak. Last week the FDA recalled all of Trader Joe’s Valencia Salted Peanut Butter with Sea Salt. They pulled all the products off the shelves because they should have a link to salmonella illnesses reported in 19 states already.
Furthermore in addition to Trader Joe’s grocery store the recall over the past week has included some nut butters and nut products sold at other popular super markets as well. Some of the markets included in the recall are Whole Foods Market Target Safeway Fresh & Easy Harry and David Sprouts Heinen’s Stop & Shop Supermarket Company and several other stores all the country. And whats even more unfortunate is that some of those retailers used Sunland ingredients in items they prepared and packaged themselves so even those had to be removed. Not the best experience to be going through and not good for business but if it isn’t taken care of then we could be in a lot of trouble.
Sunland Inc is based out of Portales New Mexico and is the manufacture of the Trader Joe peanut butter. The company has gone ahead and expanded its recall to over 100 products with nuts and seeds made on the same manufacturing line just to be on the safe side. They added more products so the recall now includes almond butter cashew butter tahini and blanched and roasted peanut products.
President and CEO of Sunland Inc Jimmie Shearer had a company press release about what the next steps where going to be.
Jimmie Shearer: “While FDA, CDC, and State Health Agencies investigate to confirm the cause of illnesses reported, as a precautionary step, we have decided to voluntarily recall our Almond Butter and Peanut Butter products manufactured between May 1, 2012 and September 24, 2012. If you purchased these products, do not eat them. Please return the product to your supermarket for a full refund or dispose of it.”
Peanut Butter Recall
Sunland provides nut based products to a number of United States retailers and grocery stores. Many of which have issued their own recalls to be safer on the matter and protect their customers. In addition to Trader Joe’s who pulled their Valencia Peanut Butter with Roasted Flaxseeds and Almond Butter with Roasted Flaxseeds the same products are sold at Target, Stop and Shop Supermarket company, Harry and David, Whole Foods Market, Fresh and Easy, Sprouts, Heinen’s, and Giant Foods. All of these supermarket stores also pulled the same products off their shelves.
