Remember Remember the 5th of November

So how did the world known hacktivist group Anonymous celebrate November 5th. Well just like in Guy Fawkes popular film V for Vendetta they fought for freedom! The hacktivist group Anonymous uses the mask symbol from the movie V for Vendetta because they are similar to the British anarchists in the film fighting for their freedom. They also use the ever so popular quote from the film: We are Anonymous We are Legion We do not forgive We do not forget Expect us. In V for Vendetta November 5th represents the spoils of a plot by Catholics to blow up the House of Lords and get rid of the Protestant King James I. Check out the video below to see what we mean..

So as of today Anonymous has gone ahead and attacked websites for major companies and organizations to celebrate the date. Some of the ones that were hacked were PayPal, Symantec, ImageShack, NBC, the Argentina Government Bank, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe as well as the official website for an Australian government program for disabled people.

Many of the websites that were affected have been rumored to be back to normal control and everything is ok. According to web rumors Anonymous claims to have stolen some documents and even personal information such as PayPal passwords. The hackers also took to social media sites like Twitter to proclaim their commemorative actions. They sent out a torrent that began around 9pm ET last night with the following statement from the official Anonymous group.

Anonymous Message: “Preparing #OpVendetta Remember, remember 5th of November.”

Moreover most of the attacks were said to be minor by merely defacing websites with Anonymous messaging in protest of supposed anti-freedom initiatives by governments. The main focus is with the attack on PayPal. Anonymous claims its hackers stole information from 27,935 accounts and posted passwords for all to see. So far no evidence has been found to make any claims but PayPal has announced that they are looking into it. If this is true than Anonymous is in for some trouble because this isn’t your typical vandalism or mischief, this is actually allowing the theft of real assets.

We’ll just have to wait and see what the verdict is when or if PayPal makes its claim.
