This is by far the most epic American Crime Film to ever be released. The Godfather was directed by Francis Ford Coppola in 1972. It was based on the 1969 novel written by Mario Puzo. The fact that the screenplay was written by both gentleman and the movie stared, Marlon Brando as Don Vito Corleone, Al Pacino as Michael Corleone, James Caan as Sonny Corleone, John Cazale as Fredo Corleone, Robert Duvall as Tom Hagen, Diane Keaton as Kay Adams and Talia Shire as Connie Corleone to name a few. The Godfather is a fictional story that spans between 1945 and 1955. It shows the world some of the experiences the Italian-American Corleone crime family had. After the first one came two sequels although i do feel that the first one is the best one.
The Godfather was not the first gangster film of it’s time but it did have a very strong impact when it came out. Coppola’s portrayal of the Corleone family and his portrayal of the mobsters was so in depth that it won many awards and recognitions. The movie also opened the door for more mobster movies such as Martin Scorsese’s “Goodfellas” (Another Classic) and for the TV Series The Sopranos done by David Chase.
The opening scene of the movie is one of the most powerful scenes in the film and completely sets the stage. It shows the audience the type of man Vito Corleone is and the type of respect he gets.
The story begins with “Don” Vito Corleone sitting in his office, relaxed in his chair, slowly massaging a baby cat in his arms. All the while he is having a discussion on the matter of justice with his old friend Bonasera. Bonasera had just come to the Don to ask him to kill two men for money. Bonasera’s daughter had just been beaten up by her boyfriend and an accomplice and put in the hospital. The Don at first feels disrespected by Bonasera when he asks him to kill the gentleman and offers to pay him. Don Corleone denies Bonasera the deed of death but tells him that he will take care of the matter. To the Don justice is only an eye for an eye, and because Bonasera’s daughter is not dead he shall not kill the two men.
To summarize it, Don Vito Corleone is the head of the New York Mafia Family and is overseeing his daughters wedding while people are asking him for favors. It is said that on the day of his daughters wedding the Godfather will grant a favor to anyone. His beloved son Michael is home from the war and comes to the wedding with his girlfriend Kay. Michael had gone to college and enlisted in the army, he has no real interest in becoming part of the family business. In Michaels eyes the family business is much like his own father, kind and compassionate to the ones who give him respect. But those who stand in his way he shows no mercy and they will endure a ruthless amount of violence. It’s a very old country take on things. And with times changing some of the other families don’t want to follow these old ways of living and want to start selling drugs. To Don Corleone community and family are very important things and he does not agree with drug business at all. This causes a rival because with out the Don’s influence selling drugs on the streets is no easy task.
I’m going to stop myself now before i give away the rest of the movie. Honestly though, the only way to truly understand the greatness of this film is to watch the movie. So go rent it, buy it, barrow it from a friend who cares just watch it. Then you’ll understand.
