Breaking News Update:
George Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer, faces a second-degree murder charge for shooting Trayvon Martin, an unarmed black teenager in Sanford, Fla., last month. The special prosecutor in the case announced this news just a few hours ago on Wednesday April 11, 2012.
In a televised news conference, State Attorney. Angela B. Corey went over the charges in the case that have sparked a national outcry with demonstrations calling for Zimmerman’s arrest. According to Corey they did not come to this decision lightly and the did not go for it by public pressure.
Zimmerman, who is still stating he acted in self-defense, is now in custody. His family says he has been hiding since the shooting due to the large amount of death threats he has been receiving.
The Reports states that Martin, 17, was returning from a convenience store run on Feb. 26 2012. He had purchased a bag of Skittles candy and an iced tea when he caught Zimmerman’s eye. Zimmerman, 28, was driving out of his gated community in Sanford at the time on his way to the supermarket when he called theto report a young black male acting suspiciously. He told them he could possibly be on drugs.
The police dispatcher asked Zimmerman if he was following the teenager and when Zimmerman replied that he was, the dispatcher told him: “We don’t need you to do that.”
It was only moments later when Zimmerman got out of his car and armed with a 9-millimeter weapon he shot the boy.
Zimmerman told reporters that he shot Martin in self-defense. He stated the youth struck him in the face, knocked him down and began pounding his head into the ground. Many people however seem to believe Zimmerman to be the aggressor. Feeling high and mighty by his status as the self-appointed neighborhood watch captain.
As the weeks after the shooting moved on many gathered to perform marches, protests and rallies all across the countthe U.S. Justice Department and the FBI have launched probes into the case as well. The case had even gained the attention of President Obama, who called for a complete and thorough investigation.
