The year is 1998, and the city Manhattan is on the edge of its seat with anticipation about the upcoming auction of the estate of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. However, the auction is far more than a diversion for Wally Winthrop (Abbie Cornish), who is trapped in an unhappy and abusive marriage. To Wally Winthrop, no act of devotion in history is more romantic than King Edward VIII (James D’Arcy) giving up the throne to be with his one true love Wallis Simspon (Andrea Riseborough). Transfixed by the Windsors’ lives, Wally becomes obsessed with the love story of how Simspon, an American, was able to capture the heart of King Edward VIII. As she learns more about the sacrifices Wallis made in choosing to be with Edward, Wally finds the courage to follow her own heart and create her own happiness. Unfortunately though, the deeper Wally dives into the background of the love affair, the more obvious it is that their relationship was so smooth. And with each new discovery an increasingly dull pictures of the once-happy couple begin to pop up, Wally begins to question about the prospect of true love
